Minnesota has several organizational entities which help promote and administer federal section 8 and voucher program throughout the state

Chief among this is the Central Minnesota Housing Partnership; a nonprofit incorporated in May 1983 and named Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) by Minnesota’s Housing Finance Agency in 1994.

CMHP has as its goal the preservation, improvement and proliferation of affordable housing units in the central region of the state and serves 16 counties there.  It offers a range of programs and services that offer affordable, income based housing to low and moderate income families. Among services offered are programs in affordable home ownership, rental rehab programs, homebuyer counseling and education as well as efforts in planning and development of affordable housing availability.

The Minnesota Housing Finance Agency itself is the state’s affordable housing bank.  It provides tools and assistance in aiding state residents to buy and fix up homes, as well as working to insure the preservation of affordable rentals in the state with is financing and asset management programs.  It works closely with agencies such as the aforementioned CMHP and others to achieve these goals.

Other resources for affordable income based housing in Minnesota include CommonBond Communities the largest non profit provider of affordable housing in the upper Midwest a position it has held for over 40 years.  This organization owns, develops or manages over 5,000 properties and serves not only cities in Minnesota but also in Iowa and Wisconsin—over 50 all told.  Additionally they offer onsite services to low income based housing unit residents aimed at transforming lives and creating long terms assets to the wider community.
